Full color eco e-paper

The 13.3-inch Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP) is the cutting-edge solution designed by E Ink. This eye-catching solution is the next step in e-paper evolution. It is colorful as LCD but also eco as e-paper.

The most central parameters of this product are in the table below:

The operation of e-paper is based on the electrophoresis phenomenon. The cells are made of a mixture of oil and water with particles of pigment. They are set between two parallel electrodes. When a positive or negative charge is applied, the particles of specified color move up or down, to create the desired image. Originally only black and white pigments were used, which allowed obtaining at most greyscale images (1-, 2-, 4-bit).

On the way to full color – Spectra & Triton

An E Ink’s substitute for the first fully colored display is Spectra, enriched with one additional pigment – yellow or red.

The next one – Triton is a traditional black and white display overlaid with an RGB-filter. It is not perfect – the saturation is limited and the tones are a bit greyish.

The new quality: Advanced Color ePaper

In 2016, E Ink presented the latest color e-paper technology – Advanced Color ePaper. In this technology each pixel consists of four pigments forming eight primary colors. The pigment particles differ in size, polarity, charge. They can be moved by the changes in the voltage. At present, it is top-notch full-color e-paper solution.

If Advanced Color ePaper will completely eliminate Triton? Well, it is possible. The application of RGB-filter array in Triton causes imperfections such as limited resolution. In fact, per four pixels of a classic e-paper display, there is only one pixel in this solution.

The traditional features in the newest technology

Since the 1970s the e-paper technology is continuously improved. It is worth noticing that introduced modifications have never affected traditional functionalities (also in Advanced Color ePaper). These are unlimited viewing angles, ultra-low power consumption, and excellent readability (even in the sunlight). It is worth noticing that in the dark the e-paper requires an additional backlight, e.g. LEDs (still – in comparison to LCD displays – it will be an energy-efficient solution).

It seems that the only drawback of Advanced Color ePaper is the way of content refreshing – the pigments are applying in layers. The final image is visible after about 30 seconds (depending on the temperature). Indeed, this is a challenge for E Ink’s engineers.

The eco alternative

In August 2018, for the first time 16-years-old, Greta Thunberg had stood in front of the Swedish Parliament. She wanted to draw attention to the problem of the future of the Earth. In all, it seems that the protest was a success – today young people all over the world go out into the streets to point out the importance of environmental protection. That is why the e-paper is a worth noticing alternative for energy-saving solutions.

E-paper, usually associated with e-book readers, is a common carrier of various information – f.e. in industrial applications.

The Advanced Color ePaper can also be used as an eye-catching architectural element. The inspiration is in a different technology designed by E Ink – Prism. It is used in i.a. DAZZLE – an outdoor public artwork located at the San Diego International Airport’s new Rental Car Center. It is made of over 2000 tiles that display animations.

There are two versions of ACeP in the Unisystem’s offer – with or without an open frame module.
